"Excavation of the Mont Cenis base tunnel, the centerpiece of the Lyon-Turin rail link and the Mediterranean Corridor of the trans-European transport network, is progressing. The tunnel consists of two parallel single-track tubes each 57.5 km long. Project cost is €11.1 billion, 30% above the 2015 estimate, with funding split: 40% EU, 35% Italy, 25% France. Travel time between Paris and Milan will drop from seven to four and a half hours, and freight is expected to shift from road to rail. Completion is targeted for 2033."
