0xBASE INTEL BRIEF
  • May 28, 2026: 10°C recorded at 3,466 m altitude in Mont Blanc massif.
  • Global glacier mass loss since 2000: 6,500 Gt; acceleration of 36% after 2012.
  • Austrian Alps: 94 of 96 glaciers receding; two glaciers retreated >100 m.

"On May 28, 2026, the temperature at Pointe Helbronner (3,466 m) in the Mont Blanc massif reached 10°C. A study estimates that glaciers worldwide lost about 6,500 gigatonnes of ice since 2000, with a 36% acceleration between 2012 and 2023 compared to 2000-2011. In the Austrian Alps, 94 of 96 monitored glaciers retreated, some by over 100 meters. Permafrost thaw likely contributed to the landslide that destroyed the village of Blatten in Switzerland on May 28, 2025."
