"UK-based Global OTEC has installed the world's first floating Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) platform off the Canary Islands. The plant generates baseload, emission-free electricity 24/7 by exploiting the temperature difference between warm surface water and cold deep seawater. Supported by the European PLOTEC consortium, the platform is designed for small island developing states (SIDS) to replace expensive diesel generators. It is hurricane-proof and can also desalinate water. Next step is a commercial module in Hawaii."
