"Spain has switched on Europe's first pilot plant using a submerged lance furnace to recover critical metals from electronic waste. The CSIC facility in Madrid melts e-waste at over 1,200°C to extract copper, gold, silver, and platinum. Europe loses an estimated €16 billion annually from poor e-waste recycling. The EU Critical Raw Materials Act targets 25% recycled content by 2030. The project is a public-private partnership between CSIC, Atlantic Copper, and Glencore Technology."
