"Dirk U. Stikker (1887–1979) was a Dutch politician and diplomat. He studied law at the University of Groningen and held various positions in banking and industry. In 1946 he founded the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and served as its chairman. From 1948 to 1952 he was Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, representing the country at the Round Table Conference on Indonesia. He later served as Ambassador to London and Reykjavik. In 1958 he became Permanent Representative to NATO. From April 1961 to August 1964 he served as Secretary General of NATO and Chairman of the North Atlantic Council. He resigned in 1964 and died in 1979."
