0xBASE INTEL BRIEF
  • 50-meter single dish with 12-meter secondary mirror
  • Submillimeter wavelengths to peer through dust
  • Field of view 16 times the moon's area
  • Renewable energy and kinetic energy recovery
  • International collaboration led by Europe

"The European-led AtLAST project (Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope) is a 50-meter single-dish telescope in Chile's Atacama desert. It can see through dense dust clouds covering much of the universe, with a field of view 16 times the moon's size. AtLAST runs entirely on renewable energy, recovers kinetic energy from movement, and expects to detect 50 million galaxies in 1,000 hours. Operations are expected around 2030."
