"NATO deployed Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2) in the Aegean Sea in February 2016 at the request of Germany, Greece, and Türkiye to conduct reconnaissance and surveillance of illegal migrant crossings. The force shares real-time information with Greek and Turkish coast guards and Frontex. NATO sensors complement Frontex assets due to larger ship platforms. All vessels are obligated to rescue people in distress. The operation involved around five ships on average."
