Three Seas Initiative retains gas focus despite clean-energy fund of funds (ecfr.eu)

• Five of nine 3SI flagship energy projects are gas-related; all six projects completed since 2021 were gas.
• EU imports of Russian pipeline gas fell from 160 bcm (2021) to under 40 bcm (2025).
• New €2bn fund of funds should be directed to clean energy, not new gas capacity.

"The Three Seas Initiative (3SI) has helped reduce EU dependence on Russian gas since 2016, but five of its nine flagship energy projects remain gas-related. A new €2bn "fund of funds" should be redirected towards renewables, hydrogen, and grid modernisation, argues ECFR. EU Russian pipeline imports fell from 160 bcm (2021) to under 40 bcm (2025). The 3SI states have significant offshore wind, nuclear, and hydrogen potential. The previous 3SI fund closed at under €1bn in January 2026."
