EU data centre energy demand: roadmap lacks binding performance standards before 2027 (ecfr.eu)

"Rising electricity demand from AI and data centres in Europe threatens to slow low-carbon transitions. A combined supply gap of 80 TWh is projected by 2030. The European Commission published a strategic roadmap on 3 June 2026, but relies on voluntary agreements and only considers binding energy-performance standards by 2027. The ECFR urges immediate binding standards following Germany, China, and Japan, plus fast-track grid access for decarbonising heavy industry. Greater transparency on data centre energy use and sustainable AI algorithms are also recommended."
