"Europe and Japan are advancing commercial nuclear fusion. The LIPAc linear accelerator in Rokkasho, Japan, has been upgraded and is set for final phase before commissioning in 2027. It tests particle beams to validate materials for future reactors. The precursor IFMIF-DONES is under construction in Escúzar, Spain, costing around €700 million, half funded by Spain. IFMIF-DONES is critical for DEMO, the demonstration reactor that will pave the way for commercial fusion plants. It will produce high-energy neutrons to test candidate materials under fusion-like conditions."
