0xBASE INTEL BRIEF
  • Typhon missile system deployed to Kanoya Air Base for Valiant Shield exercises until 1 July.
  • Tomahawk cruise missiles with 1,600 km range can strike parts of China from Japan.
  • China calls Typhon a strategic offensive weapon, accusing Japan of accelerated remilitarisation.

"The United States is deploying its Typhon midrange missile system to Japan for exercises with the Self-Defence Forces. The system will be used in the Valiant Shield drills at Kanoya Air Base through July 1, followed by Orient Shield in September, then moved to a US base in Japan from mid-October. Typhon can fire Tomahawk cruise missiles with a range of up to 1,600 km, reaching parts of China. China reacted sharply, calling Typhon a strategic offensive weapon and accusing Japan of accelerating remilitarisation. The deployment follows the collapse of the INF Treaty and signals a shift in US-Japanese defence planning against China."
