"Brian Walsh, a scientist at Boston University, has proposed a method to reinforce Earth's magnetic field against solar storms. Six spacecraft in geostationary orbit would release lithium or barium, which ionize under solar UV radiation to form cold, static plasma. This plasma acts as a barrier against high-energy solar plasma. Currently only simulations exist; no space tests have been conducted. Historical solar storms, such as the 1859 Carrington Event, have caused significant damage to infrastructure."
