Helium detected in atmosphere of Earth-like exoplanet LHS 1140 b (heise.de)
0xBASE INTEL BRIEF
- Helium detected in atmosphere of super-Earth LHS 1140 b
- Detection via WINERED spectrograph on Magellan Telescope
- Atmosphere shows temporal variability
"Astronomers have detected helium in the upper atmosphere of the exoplanet LHS 1140 b, a super-Earth in the habitable zone of its star. The detection, made using the WINERED spectrograph on the Magellan Telescope in Chile, marks the first clear evidence of an atmosphere on a rocky planet in the habitable zone. The helium was observed only during certain transits, indicating a variable process."
