  • Neutron sensor detects uranium/plutonium from up to 4,000 m.
  • Feasibility study published in Nature; no prototype yet.
  • Aims to verify compliance with the Outer Space Treaty.

"MIT researcher Areg Danagoulian proposes a neutron sensor to detect nuclear warheads on satellites. The device, the size of a large encyclopedia, can identify uranium or plutonium from up to 4,000 meters with 99% certainty over a week. From 1,000 meters, detection takes one hour. The concept, published in Nature, aims to verify compliance with the Outer Space Treaty."
