"Germany's Bild newspaper published two purchase contracts for the historic note used by GDR official Günter Schabowski on November 9, 1989, announcing the opening of the Berlin Wall. Investigative reporter Hans-Wilhelm Saure won a 2023 court case forcing the Haus der Geschichte foundation to release the documents. The note was first sold in 2006 for €12,650 by Thomas Schalck-Golodkowski, son of a former GDR foreign currency procurer, to Uwe Krüger, son-in-law of a former SED economic politician. In 2014, Krüger sold it to the museum for €25,000. The foundation spent over €120,000 in legal fees to keep the deal confidential."
