0xBASE INTEL BRIEF
  • US fighters in Europe: planned reduction from ~150 to 100.
  • Maritime patrol aircraft: from 26 to 15.
  • All eight aerial refuelling tankers to be removed.
  • Potential withdrawal of a carrier group, missile submarine, and one bomber group.
  • Previous cut of 200 posts in NATO expert centres.
  • Europe cannot quickly fill the capability gap; Ankara summit in July key.

"The United States intends to cut the number of F-16 and F-15E fighters available for NATO operations in Europe from around 150 to 100, reduce maritime patrol aircraft from 26 to 15, and remove all eight aerial refuelling tankers. Additionally, a missile submarine, an aircraft carrier group, and one of two bomber groups may be redeployed. Washington frames this as burden-sharing, but European forces cannot quickly replace these capabilities."
