0xBASE INTEL BRIEF
  • FCC approves test satellite despite intense astronomer opposition
  • 18x18 meter mirror to reflect sunlight from 625 km orbit
  • Environmental review skipped; launch deadline July 2032

"The US Federal Communications Commission has granted approval for a test satellite called Earendil-1 by startup Reflect Orbital. The satellite will carry an 18x18-meter steerable thin-film reflector to beam sunlight to Earth at night. The FCC decision came despite fierce opposition from astronomers, who warn of severe impacts on night sky observations. The agency limited its review to radio frequency use and orbital debris, declining to conduct an environmental assessment. The launch must occur by July 2032."
