China switches on first undersea data center powered by offshore wind (newatlas.com)
0xBASE INTEL BRIEF
- First underwater data center powered by offshore wind goes online
- Uses seawater cooling, no freshwater needed, land use reduced 90%
- 192 server racks, current 2.3 MW, planned capacity 24 MW
"Chinese engineers have switched on the world's first underwater data center (UDC) powered primarily by offshore wind turbines. Located off Shanghai's coast, the facility uses seawater for cooling, eliminates freshwater consumption, and reduces land use by over 90%. It houses 192 server racks across four levels, currently operating at 2.3 MW with a planned capacity of 24 MW. The cooling system cuts electricity consumption by 22.8%."
