"Marine Le Pen will contest the 2027 French presidential election after an appeals court on July 7 upheld her fraud conviction but reduced her ineligibility, allowing her to run while she appeals to the Court of Cassation. The appeal suspends a house arrest sentence. Le Pen is polling ahead of rivals in the first round and slightly ahead of centrist challengers in the second. The European Council on Foreign Relations advises EU policymakers to prepare for a disruptive Le Pen presidency that could unwind French integration with the EU, and notes that cooperation may be possible on European defence but other areas may require coalitions bypassing Paris."
