Cheyenne Suspends Meta Data Center Water Discharges After Bacterium Contamination (tomshardware.com)
- Meta contractor discharged rare metal-resistant bacterium Cupriavidus gilardii.
- Two Cheyenne water reclamation plants offline for months.
- Discharge privileges revoked March 24; wastewater now hauled offsite.
"Cheyenne, Wyoming, suspended industrial wastewater discharges from data centers after a Meta contractor discharged water containing Cupriavidus gilardii, a rare metal-resistant bacterium, into the city's sewer system. This put two water reclamation plants offline for months. The Board revoked the contractor's discharge privileges on March 24, and the suspension now covers all connected data centers. Meta is supporting its general contractor, which now hauls wastewater offsite. Independent testing found no trace of the bacterium, and the reuse system is back online."
